OCAD Thesis - “Close Walking”:
A city is not just a collection of buildings but a mass of human hearts.
My artistic practice this year focused on walking and thinking,
observing Psychogeography and relating it to my own experience.
My spontaneous adventures lead to
spontaneous illustrations about
community, love, mystery, and belonging:
the secret materials of a city.
In China, the name for a "cootie catcher" is North South East West.
Each direction leads to a different fate.
If I walk spontenously in all directions,
the cootie catcher is unfolded, and all fortunes are connected together.
Walking through different neighbourhoods
I meet and draw different people. These pieces
of the mosaic are right next to eachother,
but they rarely interact. What would an
interconnected, cosmopolitan city look like?
All different but tied together.
By mixing up different pieces of the mosaic, colourful connections form.
One step further toward love and understanding.
Urban Legends - 2026. Collage, Inks, Ballpoint Pen, Pencil.
Imagined urban legends, old strangers who all know eachother through a network of city pigeons.
The roads in my body run like dragons when I think of you. But my heart flees by train. City Love is like that, like falling in love with an alien, a pigeon, or a payphone.
I grew up in Cangzhou, China.
No matter how far we are, or how much our home changes,
we are all connected by the canal.
